Louise's morning ABE
class started working on autobiographical pieces. The plan is to bind them into
small books and
perhaps some of these
will be shared at March's Coffee House.
Joe's morning pre-GED
class worked on a Free Speech/First Amendment Unit starting with the Alien and
Sedition Acts of
1798. They also did a lot of work studying basic
chemistry (atoms and elements) which may lead into some reading about
energy and electricity
concepts. Both of these units are build
around close reading and sentence
combining activities.
The evening GED class had
moderate, but steady attendance. With
more regular attendance, people were putting a lot of
thought and effort into
some very interesting individual writing projects and everybody is making
progress in Math.
Amber is building a good
working relationship with the Career Center's MCAS Remediation Youth Worker,
Erica Heilig. This
has opened new avenues
for removing barriers to employment for younger learners in Amber's block grant
funded program.
They have already found
funding to help one young woman get her
driver's license.
Amber introduced the
Valentines Day Fresh Flower Fundraiser idea to students who seemed excited and
full of ideas.
Modeled as a work based
learning program, students will write resumes and cover letters expressing
interest in helping
with the project.
Students will attend employee meetings, and be awarded certificates of
completion, if merited. Stay tuned
for next month's report!
Successes
Guest Speaker from Greenfield
Community College to Even Start
Thanks to Amber, an admissions
counselor, Sarah Scarchilli-Janus, and GED Testing Administrator, Jean Boucias,
came to Even Start
to provide students with GCC
information, including financial aide, admissions processes, and class
scheduling.
Completed
and Mailed Annual Appeals Letters
Thanks to Jennifer, Janice and
her friend, and Al & Mary Siano we sent off over 500
appeals letters with personalized notes and
handwritten envelopes. We are really appreciative for all the
support and background logistics that made this possible.
Two
GEDs!
Hope Noyes passed and is now
celebrating in Hawaii. We hope she
looks into some colleges while she's there.
Nick Stone also passed. He's
currently working in construction and hopes to get his Contractor's license
someday.
We are very happy for both of them.
