Successes/Highlights

More Job Readiness Workshops!

Amber is offering a series of 5 bi-weekly workshops to current students and the general public as part of her Block

Grant funded transitions services.  These activities are well attended and well publicized.  They are being offered in

collaboration with the Franklin Hampshire Career Center.

Topics include: resumes, cover letters, and interviewing skills.

Porter and Chester Orientation

Michelle Rypysc had frank discussions with all the Charboneau classes about the job market and the training

opportunities available to young GED graduates.

The Porter and Chester presentation offers a clear-eyed comparison of the contrasting offerings of Community

Colleges vs. skill based Career Training Institutes like Porter and Chester.

(Without bringing the military into the comparison at all, those may well be the two best options for our young learners.)

AFSC Military Recruitment Awareness

Raul Matta of the American Friends Service Committee co-presented a workshop exposing the deceptive practices

of US military recruiters in the context of the current war on terrorism and occupation of Iraq.

Class Activities

Though Joe was either  home or here working sick for almost half the month, Louise and

volunteers kept people busy doing GED pretests and working on their monthly writing

requirements.

Louise's Morning ABE Class also had some time to work on grammar skills.  These classes

were covered by volunteers when Louise was managing Joe's classes for him.

Joe's Morning Pre-GED class was able to do  a short unit on different conceptions of "Justice"

comparing definitions offered by autocrats, communists and liberal democrats.  It did inspire

one learner to start reading Will Durant's "The Story of Philosophy" and download two of

  Plato's Dialogs.

Enrollment continues to grow in the Afternoon GED Transitions Class.   We continue to have

no problem recruiting highly motivated students who are able to demonstrate exceptional self

direction and persistence in their Math and Writing Work.

The Evening GED class had fairly steady attendance and is almost full.
