Activities
We are very happy in our new site.
The GED and Pre-Ged classes continue to be
full. But thankfully they are no longer
overflowing, and this is partly
due to the spaciousness of the new digs. The waiting list continues to grow both with
new intakes and with
familiar, but previously inactive, learners.
The ABE class is nearly full and one of this
month's intakes is scheduled to start classes there in early March.
Louise's Morning ABE class spent a lot of time
researching and writing about individuals associated with African
American History.
Joe's Morning Pre-GED class was busy with
Measurement conversions (Bestworks), the Presidential Primaries,
and The History of Scientific Thought Unit.
The Evening GED class has been following the
Presidential Primaries and has also been writing extensively on
"Why I Left School". This topic
actually emerged from a comparison of the major party's approaches to public
education policy.
Successes
Our New Site
Our classroom facilities
are much more spacious and productive.
We are not completely set-up yet, but by the end of the month we
were able to put together a make-shift kitchen where we cooked up
a huge meal as an adjunct to the Bestworks culinary arts program.
Meeting with the Community Relations Committee
of the Greenfield City Counsel
It actually wasn't an official meeting because the weather
conditions prevented a quorum. But Joe
spent time with two leading town
fathers who asked lots of questions about our learners, our
services, and especially our collaborations (Bestworks, Even Start, etc)
They are interested in helping Greenfield to see itself as a
diversified complex community even though it has strong roots in
manufacturing and skilled trade industries.
BestWorks Chicken Cacciatore Extravaganza
We like to call it the "Chicken Roast, Melba Toast, Holy
Ghost, Jambalaya, Jubilee and Fricassee!"
We actually had demonstrations from BESTWORKS learners on proper
and safe knife handling, food safety, chicken fabrication, and
Our kitchen now has a rotisserie, and we are working on getting
some more electric burners.
Our "Classical" web page is up.
http://www.literacyproject.org/Charboneau/tunits/HistoryScientificThought/Timeline/Classical.html
It took six classes to write a paragraph describing Greek and
Roman antiquity in relationship to the development of Scientific Thinking.
But this was the final page of our unit website.

Now, we hope to pull the info off the web and put it into a
portable booklet.
Three learners Registered to Vote!
We have been paying quite a bit of attention to the Presidential
Primaries. Kyle who is just about to
turn 18 and Aubry who turned 18 last
year are both eager to vote for the first time. (They are too late to vote in the Primary,
but are looking forward to voting in November.)
Louise also registered a new intake.
