Successes/Highlights

Renee Lucas started working as a GCC Work Study Placement.

Renee is an enthusiastic classroom resource, eager and able to assist learners with Writing and Math.  She has

begun work  on an Academic Style and Work Interest Survey for our ASE learners.  (This will be a learning

experience for us, for her, and for our learners.) She is also an energetic organizer able to find places for things and

then put them there!  (Louise and Joe stand in awe).

As an added bonus, GCC is picking up the entire cost of this placement.

Renee's work here is very important given the reduced hours of our Transitions Worker.  (Please don't walk away, Renee)

College for a Day at HCC

We took 7 students.  Everyone had a very good time. Everyone was impressed by the welcoming opportunity.  And,

at least one learner was very inspired by the prospect of attending college.

Challenges

Some Unacceptable Vandalism and Hooliganism

There have been a few troubling incidents that are starting to look like a pattern:

1. A railing on the stairway to our classroom was partially ripped from the wall.

2. Someone (as a prank) let the air out of Joe's bicycle tire.

3. There was a fight outside our entry involving an afternoon student and a (non innocent) passerby.  In the fracas

damage was done to Joe's bike.  (Charboneau will be picking up the tab for the repair.)

We have put restrictions on some people's break time, but it also looks  like it's time to start managing our enrollment a

little more carefully.

Class Activities

The lull in attendance during January and February seems to be over.  It seemed like that lull

might have been partially the result of two weeks without classes after December (a very busy

and very stable month for us).   It will be interesting to see what happens after our April

two-week break.  Whatever committee next does our calendar should probably consider the

importance of consistency and predictability in maintaining a stable learning environment.

Louise's Morning ABE class did a unit on budgeting, maintaining a checking account and

check writing and put their usual time in on fractions.   They also worked very hard on

different kinds of writing projects including structured book reports and responses to

prompts.  They also managed to get a lot of MAPT testing done.

Joe's morning class did (mega) extended reading using advanced history texts about the New

Deal.  The focus in Math was mostly Measurement Conversions - which also involve analyzing

and planning the steps for solving a word problem.

The Afternoon Class focused on their Individual Learning Plans, but two people chose to do

Writing Projects (structured notes) on The Progressive Era in US History.  Davey from Women

In Action is also doing some AIDS prevention outreach work with this group now.

The Evening Class also worked hard on their Individual Learning Plans, but they always ask

for Group Time too.  Louise did some Black History with them focused around the MLK "I

Have a Dream" speech, and Joe did something with them about Teddy Roosevelt and the

Progressives.
