Class Activities
Louise's morning class had 10 learners enrolled with attendance
holding pretty steadily at about 60% of scheduled
classes. We got a start on resumes, but put a great deal
of effort into the Women's History Project.
We also
worked on maps, measurements, and of course, fractions.
Attendance has leveled off in Joe's morning class. It started out
at 16 but by the middle of the month
was hovering
around 10 per class. This actually represents a great deal more
turbulence than may be apparent because
only 3 of
those 16 clearly "stopped out", . . .but 7 learners did
attend 70% or more of scheduled classes.
Joe is struggling to
get some "buy in" to portfolios with several learners
continuing to work on their resumes.
The YES Financial
Literacy seminars were terrific.
We also continued to delve into the world of bacteria (related to
BestWorks and food
safety) with some detours
back into the Linnaean classification system and some other frameworks for
understanding classifications and order in our living world.
Attendance was disappointing in the Evening Class. Only 2 learners
attended over 70% of scheduled classes.
We
actually started with 18 learners enrolled, but the highest
attendance was 8 with most classes seating only 4 to 6
learners. We are looking at
some programming and scheduling changes.
We also had visitors from the DOE and Commonwealth Corporation
coming to evaluate our overall operation and our
Bestworks efforts, respectively.
Successes
Field Trip to Europe!
(Actually, we only went to Ware), but Joan shared not only slides of her recent vacation in France, but
all kinds of excellent and tasty
French culinary treats!
We are really grateful to Sharon, Carl, and especially Joan for
the hard work and spirit they put into making this such a rewarding
experience for everyone who went.
Cake Decorating [Bestworks]
One of the best things about Bestworks is that we get to eat a
lot. Cake decorating is definitely a marketable skill and Sarah's mom, Chris
Behilo, has the pay stubs to prove it.
She can also make some really fancy rosettes and
"swerllies" on a cupcake!
Louise brought in several dozen small cakes, and we did our best to follow along with a
professional cake decoration demonstration.
(Many schools of art ended up being represented.)
Financial Literacy Seminar (Bestworks)
Tim Cohen-Mitchell made these workshops available to all the
learners in Joe's preGED class. Four
sessions covered 1. The Basics of
Financial Planning, 2. Budgeting, 3, Investment and Savings, and
4. Credit.
Kudos to Tim and Eva for working so hard to provide make-up
opportunities to individuals who missed any session.
Women in History/Famous Women Project
This is a very simple, very fun, and very effective way to share
learning across sites. North Quabbin
got it rolling by creating
informative, decorative cards explaining the roles of famous women
in history. They sent it to Louise's
class in a beautifully decorated
box, to which we added our contributions. We are now ready to pass it on to the next
site.

Student Comments this Month
4/6/04 1 ASE Morning Female 18.00 -- 24.99
I read the student handbook. All the rules are sane/normal.
4/6/04 3 ASE Evening Female 18.00 -- 24.99
I really want to learn. I learned that just because you quit school,
it doesn't mean you're stupid. There's a lot of
people in my class that are really smart. I'm beginning to think I am smart.
4/19/04 1 ASE Morning Female 45.00 -- 59.99
The group did most of the [talking. T]he teacher said very little. I'm used to the teacher talking[. T]his
helps me
when he teach[es] the class.
4/20/04 3 ASE Evening Female 18.00 -- 24.99
I am certainly learning more about myself with
what I've been writing.
4/27/04 1 ASE Morning Female 45.00 -- 59.99
I gave a demonstration about my bu[d]get with a
pie graph of expense and the percentage of each bill I paid.
4/27/04 3 ASE Evening Female 18.00 -- 24.99
I got the 5 paragraph essay down pat.
