"Virtual
School " Project Featured
On October 5, 2004,
AALC's participation in the 2003-2004 International Classroom and
School Virtual Visit Project was among the exhibits at the Massachusetts
Department of Education's Annual ABE Directors' Meeting, in North Falmouth,
MA.
College Talk
On September 28,
2004, Bob LaPalme, an admissions recruiter at Greenfield Community College
came to our GED morning class. He showed us college applications and financial
aid forms, took questions and share d information about the process of
applying to college. Students in our GED class have since decided that
they want to major in fields like Literature, Nursing and Business Administration.
Students and
teachers learn about worker's rights
On June 5, 2004, we were fortunate to have
Aaron Wilson, Executive Director of the Western Massachusetts Coalition
for Occupational Safety and Health, visit our class to inform us all about
our federally-guaranteed rights as workers.
Three Amherst
Adult Learning Center volunteers receive UMass Community Service Awards.
On May 3, 2004,
UMass honored three of its undergraduates - Stephanie Bejtlich and Christian
Steinau, who were volunteering in our evening pre-GED class, and student
Joshua Kutticherry, who volunteers in our morning GED class -, with the
University of Massachusetts 2004 Chancellor's
Outstanding Community Service Award. A
limited number of UMass students are chosen annually for this award by
the UMass Office of Community Service
Learning at Commonwealth College.
In addition to receiving their
award personally from UMass Chancellor John V. Lombardi, all three were
treated to a awards luncheon in the UMass Campus Center. Instructor Michelle
Aguilar, who supervised all three award winners at AALC, also attended
the ceremony.
Congratulations Christian,
Josh and Stephanie! We're very grateful for your energy and commitment.
The
Amherst Adult Learning Center receives grant from Florence Savings Bank.
Florence Savings Bank donated $3500 to upgrade the computer lab at TLP's
Amherst Adult Learning Center. We were able to purchase 4 new computers
from Amherst ComputerWorks and some educational software as well. These
computers considerably improve our lab, allowing students not only to
do research on the internet more quickly, but to learn the Windows XP
operating system, improving their job readiness skills.
Evening Class Project
Between October, 2003 and
April, 2004, as part of the Virtual School Visit Project,
students in our evening class wrote back and forth to their counterparts
at our sister school in Pennsylvania, via a Yahoo group set up for this
purpose. They wrote brief biographies of themselves, as well as about
their respective classes, about what they’re studying and a movie
that both schools watched, the Charlie Chaplin film, Modern Times.
Read all about it on the web
pages they've created!
