Students Improve
Computer Skills
In December, students
spent a lot of time working with computers. One student, with help from
a volunteer, was able to access the INS website and process her application
for a student Visa. Other students got acquainted with online shopping
and browsing websites to find the lowest price.
Celebrating
Diversity Party A Success
On November 17,
2004, AALC celebrated its 20th anniversary with a well-attended party
that included students, teachers, volunteers, and some amazing food.
Activities
On October 5, 2004,
AALC's participation in the 2003-2004 International Classroom and
School Virtual Visit Project was among the exhibits at the Massachusetts
Department of Education's Annual ABE Directors' Meeting, in North Falmouth,
MA.
College Talk
On September 28,
2004, Bob LaPalme, an admissions recruiter at Greenfield Community College
came to our GED morning class. He showed us college applications and financial
aid forms, took questions and shared information about the process of
applying to college. Students in our GED class have since decided that
they want to major in fields like Literature, Nursing and Business Administration.
The
Amherst Adult Learning Center receives grant from Florence Savings Bank.
Florence Savings Bank donated $3500 to upgrade the computer lab at TLP's
Amherst Adult Learning Center. We were able to purchase 4 new computers
from Amherst ComputerWorks and some educational software as well. These
computers considerably improve our lab, allowing students not only to
do research on the internet more quickly, but to learn the Windows XP
operating system, improving their job readiness skills.
Evening Class Project
Between October, 2003 and
April, 2004, as part of the Virtual School Visit Project,
students in our evening class wrote back and forth to their counterparts
at our sister school in Pennsylvania, via a Yahoo group set up for this
purpose. They wrote brief biographies of themselves, as well as about
their respective classes, about what they’re studying and a movie
that both schools watched, the Charlie Chaplin film, Modern Times.
